Interview

this is part of the first interview i did. i had trouble rendering the whole 5 minutes, so here is 1:45 worth of film. it is edited so that the question comes up on screen and then the person answers. i did it this way so that the person is not directly talking to me, they are talking to the audience.

Questions

Who are you?

Where are you from?

What is your position in Howitt?

What do you enjoy most about communal living?

What annoys you about a communal environment?

these four questions will be common to everyone. after these questions there will be questions relating to the person specifically, such as why do you have _______ in your room?

Howitt Hall Documentary

BRIEF

I am going to create a documentary at Howitt hall which is one of the Monash university halls of residence. The documentary will look at the positives and negatives of communal living as well as the vast differences of people that live in Howitt Hall. This documentary will be in two parts. The first will be interviews with a number of residents. They will be asked questions such as: who they are, where they are from, what they enjoy about communal living, what they dislike etc etc, there will also be questions that are individual to them as they will relate to the room they are in. The second part of the documentary will be a take on animal documentaries. This will involve filming everyday situations and then adding in a voice over.

CONTEXT

My audience is most likely to be residents of Howitt hall. However I hope that it will be entertaining enough that others would enjoy watching it also. My aim is that you do not need to know about living in a residence to find this documentary entertaining. I also hope that you do not need to personally know the people involved in the documentary to enjoy watching it.

MEDIA

The media that is considered is a mix of film along with vector artwork and stills.

OUTCOME

The finished work will be presented as an interactive DVD. This DVD could potentially be used as merchandise to sell in the Hall. Depending how it turns out it could also be used as potential promotion footage. This footage could be used during open day or other such events.

project 2

after a lot of thought, as well as discussions with others, i have decided to go with the documentary style. however instead of just sitting down with someone and asking them a bunch of questions, which would be extremely linear, i have decided to base mine like an actual animal documentary, like meerkat manor. i would still be dealing with the same communal living situations, however it would be just seeing the situations, as well as having them narrated.

Project 2

So for project 2 i have decided to make a film that looks at life in a communal environment. Seeing as i live at Howitt Hall at Monash Clayton, i thought this would be the perfect theme. the film would target issues such as conflicts that arise (noisy neigbours, stolen food, using other peoples belongings etc.) My first thought was to have the film acted out by a number of my friends and residents. however i felt that it may not be able to be pulled off seriously enough.

So as a second thought, i would make it into a documentary. the film would still deal with the same issues as previously thought, however they will be shown with peoples real opinions.
